The Folgefonna National park / the Buer glacier

Blue ice hike on the Buer glacier

Would you like to climb a tower of blue ice, or take a wander on the glacier?
The Buer glacier is unique! This is where Folgefonna breaks over the edge and stretches down the Buer valley, and you can experience the glacier at its most powerful with spectacular labyrinths, spires and cracks.

You'll meet us in the morning breeze from the glacier. While walking with the expectation of a very different landscape, you trek up the Buer valley - a beautiful, wild and exuberant valley surrounded by precipitous mountains. Follow the blue-green glacier river, running over polished mountains. Until you're at the edge of a beautiful world of blue colours and majestic mountains at the end of the narrow Buer valley.

The glacier can offer both fairly simple and more demanding blue ice in spectacular surroundings on top of the Sandvin lake, with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. The hikes last from 6-7 hours, depending on the weather. It takes about 60 minutes to walk from the Buer farm to the edge of the glacier where you put on all the climbing equipment.

For all travellers and local people - this is a chance to experience the Buer glacier with blue ice and a stunning view. The hike and the glacier make it possible to tailor the hike for all sorts of activities. Climbing is possible. While the more flat areas allow for more family-friendly hikes.

Glacier guiding between Fonnabu and Holmaskjer, Sundal-Odda

The route from Mauranger to Odda is a passage carrying a long history. At the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, people were guided on horseback to the edge of the glacier and then pulled on a sleigh across the glacier.

Meanwhile, steamboats would travel around the peninsula and pick up the tourists on the other side.

That's why we have a special pleasure in reviving this tradition and invite mountain lovers, with or without knowledge of glacier hiking, on a tour of an old historic route.

The hike from Sunndal to Fonnabu follows the beautiful Keisarstien (the emperor's path), which is very well marked up with vardar (big piles of rocks) and red Ts. From Holmaskjer, the old passage to Tokheim has been repaired and marked up. Which means hikers can make their way on their own to the edge of the glacier, where they'll be taken across the glacier by trained up guides. To cross Folgefonna takes great navigation skills, as well as special glacier equipment. That's why the trip often ends at Fonnabu or Holmaskjer for a lot of hikers. After we started glacier guiding in 2001, lots of people have had the chance to cross the glacier and experience the contrasts between summer and winter in the warm hillsides next to the glacier arms.
